A drinking and driving charge can change your life forever. Having one too many drinks and then operating a motor vehicle can bring devastating consequences – you could lose your job, be denied entry into certain countries, be labeled a "high-risk" driver and pay exorbitant or unaffordable insurance rates (as high as $1000/month) and even have your insurance company cancel your policy.
One of the worst things about being charged with impaired driving (DUI or DWI) is knowing that you will have a permanent criminal record. The personal and financial costs are undeniably high.
If that is not enough, the most frightening prospect you might have to face is imprisonment.
The minimum penalty in Ontario for a first offence is:
• Driving prohibition for one year
• A fine of no less than $1000
• Participation in the "Back on Track Course"
• Installation, at your cost, of an Ignition Interlock system (an alcohol screening device) in your vehicle for one year
The minimum penalty in Ontario for a second offence is:
• Driver's Licence Suspension for three years
• Mandatory jail term of 30 days
• Participation in the "Back on Track Course" for 11 months
• Installation, at your cost, of an Ignition Interlock system (an alcohol screening device) in your car for three years
The Ministry of Transportation's "Back on Track" counseling program costs $475. You will be required to attend classes and complete medical and psychological assessments throughout the course.
